New Season

A new season of lure coursing has begun with a 2nd place finish on Saturday April 28th with a Field Champion field of 9 Pharaoh Hounds. Sunday brought a Best of Breed win over19 Pharaohs, and... a Best In Field Win over a Whippet, Greyhound and Ridgeback run! What a weekend in Stow Massachusetts for little Zabelle.

Finally, the A.S.F.A. lure coursings stats have been posted for 2006 and our girl Zabelle has made it to 1st place out of 111 Pharaoh Hounds running in the U.S.! With a 18 point lead over 2nd place, this little girl really ran her heart out.

New work on paper

I've been working on portraits in gouache on paper. Studies in Pharaoh Hounds around the house. Here is Zabelle in paint- Just what I've been doing in ceramic and glaze only on paper.

Gouache is a solid body watercolor, used just like watercolor. This is painted on a 100lb pressed watercolor paper, that is very heavy, acid free for a long life.

I now have some bas reliefs done, waiting to get fired- These are done with a colored slip, built up into a portrait. These will be posted then. In the meantime, here is Zabelle in her Best In Field Run from November in Griswold, Ct. Totally off the ground- this girl is flying!

Northeast Regional Invitational Gilbertsville, NY

November 4th & 5th brought us to Gilbertsville NY for th Region 9 Invitational ASFA Lure coursing field trials. My Zabelle needed to win Best of Breed to bring home (for the second year) the Luxor Trophy donated by Ben & Moe Brodeur after Luxor's winning the Gillette Stake at the International Invitational trial.
Saturdays course was about 815 yards long, she ran a prelim course, and a final that put her in for Best of Breed, won that course for a third run for the day, and won Best of Breed! Asked if we wanted to go for Best In Field we said sure and ran off against a greyhound and a Rhodesian Ridgeback, taking the BIF title for the day. We did some figuring, and found out she ran about 4 miles- flat out for the two days runs. This is an Olympic Class dog who loves to run.

I started a group of Borzoi/ Russian Wolfhound portraits in September. We lurecourse with several friends, and I'm fascinated with their great looks. Big, very friendly and fast. They really could take down a deer, or drive a wolf mad.

We usually work from Jpegs, emailed to us and work from there. We pour slip, (liquid clay) into plain tile molds. These dry for a few days, cleaned and then a protrait starts. From a sketch on the tile, I paint with simple underglazes, these are simple earth and mineral dyes mixed with water. A six inch head study usually takes about two or three hours to work up. It now dries for a day to two and then is first fired to cone 03 to a hard bisque state. This is then washed, dryed and glazed with a clear gloss or satin glaze and fired to cone 05. This makes it hard, glossy and very durable, the image is fixed forever. No two tiles really ever come out the same.

Lure coursing is a performance event developed in the 1960's by Lyle Gillette and other California sighthound fanciers who hunted jackrabbits in the open field, which risked the harm caused by barbed wire fencing. They invented lure coursing as a safer, more controlled sport for sighthounds that would recreate the physical requirements of open field coursing, allowing them to continue testing the functional abilities of their sighthounds. The hounds chase plastic bags on a course laid out to simulate escaping game.
Judging
Hounds are normally run in trios, in yellow, pink, and blue colors. Judges assess performance based on each hound's abilities, identifying hounds by their blanket color. The hounds run a preliminary course and a final course, and then may run for Best of Breed. Finally, the Best of Breed run for Best in Field, as an optional stake. The hounds are scored by the following criteria:

Thank you for visiting our online blog. Westport Art Tile is a small family run business dedicated to producing canine protraits on ceramic tile. Handmade, personal and truly one-of-a-kind portraits, memorials and tributes to our best friends.
We have produced ceramic tile for over 10 years now with portraits and scenes of our own dogs, and other breeds. Our inspiration is our own Pharaoh Hounds, a primitive breed known in Malta as the Kelb Tal Fenek, or rabbit hound. Thought to have originated in the Mediteranean ages ago, it was saved by the Maltese for future generations for it's determined hunting abilities.
We show and lure course our dogs throughout the Northeast with several friends who also own this remarkable breed. We hope to show some examples of our work, and photos of our dogs at home.
